PRENATAL OR ANTENATAL CARE
Pregnancy is typically divided into three trimesters, with each trimester lasting around 12 to 14 weeks.
First Trimester (Week 1-12):
This is the initial phase of pregnancy, and it is important to schedule the first prenatal visit with a gynecologist. During this trimester, the baby's organs and body structure develop rapidly, and it is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle, consume a balanced diet, and avoid alcohol and smoking. During the first trimester, a woman may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, breast tenderness, and frequent urination.
Second Trimester (Week 13-28):
During this trimester, the baby's movements can be felt, and the pregnant woman's body starts to experience some changes. The uterus expands, and the baby's development continues, including the growth of hair and nails. Second trimester, she may feel better as the nausea and fatigue subside. However, she may experience new symptoms such as back pain, abdominal discomfort, and swelling of the feet and ankles. Regular prenatal visits and tests are necessary during this period to monitor the health of the baby and the mother.
Third Trimester (Week 29-40):
This is the final stretch of pregnancy, and the baby's growth and development are nearly complete. During this trimester, it is important to prepare for labor and delivery, which may include childbirth classes and discussions with healthcare providers about delivery options. The mother may also experience discomfort due to the baby's size and position. By the third trimester, a woman may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, heartburn, constipation, and difficulty sleeping. It's important for pregnant women to receive regular prenatal care to monitor their health and the health of the baby throughout each trimester.
TYPES OF DELIVERY
There are several types of childbirth delivery methods available. The most common types of childbirth delivery are:
Vaginal Delivery:
This is the most common type of delivery. In this method, the baby is delivered through the mother's vagina. It is a natural process and does not require any surgical intervention.
Assisted Vaginal Delivery:
In some cases, the mother may need help delivering the baby. Assisted vaginal delivery is a method in which the doctor uses instruments such as forceps or a vacuum extractor to help deliver the baby.
Caesarean Delivery:
A caesarean delivery, also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure in which the baby is delivered through an incision made in the mother's abdomen and uterus. This method is recommended when there are complications during pregnancy or labor.
Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC):
In some cases, a woman who has previously had a C-section may be able to deliver vaginally in a subsequent pregnancy. This is called a VBAC.
The type of delivery recommended will depend on several factors, including the health of the mother and baby, the size and position of the baby, and the mother's preference. It is important to discuss the different delivery options with your doctor to determine the best method for you and your baby.
Pregnancy Complications
Common gynaecological issues during pregnancy include bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, placental abruption, placenta previa, major and minor infections, molar pregnancy, and vaginal irritation. It is important to consult an obstetrician and gynaecologist if experiencing any of these issues.
High-Risk Pregnancy
A high-risk pregnancy refers to a pregnancy where the mother or the baby has an increased risk of developing health problems before, during, or after delivery. High-risk pregnancies require special care and monitoring to ensure the best possible outcome for both the mother and the baby.

Some of the factors that can contribute to a high-risk pregnancy include advanced maternal age (35 years or older), multiple pregnancies, history of miscarriage, pre-existing medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease, and pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.

Postpartum Care
Postpartum care in a maternity hospital includes monitoring the mother's physical and emotional health after childbirth, providing support for breastfeeding, checking the baby's health, and educating the mother on newborn care. This period usually lasts for about 6 weeks after delivery and requires regular check-ups to ensure proper recovery and adjustment to the new life with a baby.
